Evaluation

Year 10 Creative Media Short Film Production – Term 03 Mr Andrews

Task 4 Post-production: Self-reflection and evaluation:

Discuss your feelings about the post-production and editing task:

• Are you satisfied with the final result?

I am very satisfied with the result. The who.e process took a while to complete, but overall I am proud of my film and hope everyone enjoys it because I did.

• Did the editing require more/less time than you originally thought?

The editing required more time that I had expected. I knew the process would take time but it took more time than I had planned for which took a bit of re-arranging with my schedule but I did it.

• Would like to change any aspects of your final film (scene editing, music, dialogue etc)?

If I could change anything I would change the music because I am not really good with sound personally, so I thought maybe overall I could make that better, but I tried my best so I can't be upset with it. I also would have liked more dialogue but as we were all pressured for time, I think overall it was till good, but to make it more interesting, more dialogue would have been a good option.

• If you could start the project again what would you do differently?

If I could start the project I would get the planning over and done with as soon as possible and film for as long as possible and try and get as much footage as I could because it was difficult to reach the time of 4 minutes because on the production task in Term 3 we were told for 3-4 minutes, but with the post-production it changed to 4-5 so it would have been better for more detail with what was needed. But overall I thought it was an interesting task. I would also spend as much time as I could with sound editing as that was stressed for time so I was in a it of a rush with that so. I couldn't really perfect it to the absolute best it could be. However it was still good, but it could have been better.

Respond to each of the following dot points (using complete sentences or paragraphs). You should include as much detail as possible in your responses.

• Discuss whether your film has turned out the way you pictured it?

Yes the film turned out mostly how I pictured it. I did picture it though to be a bit more scary and horror like, but overall I liked it. I also pictured the sound to be different but I couldn't find the exact music that I pictured in my head, so I had to use what was provided in GarageBand. However the film did turn out to be one of my beast pieces of work in media arts throughout my school life.

• Describe whether your film clearly depicts the intended genre and describe some specific editing techniques you have used to achieve this;

My film not entirely clear but noticeably does portray a noir film that is crime film. I showed this in my film through using heavy when needed and barely and lighting while filming to make it very noticeable that it was a noir film. I also used colour corrector for the black and white scenes while editing. I also changed the brightness, contrast and saturation to make the lighting more powerful so it would be more like a noir film.

• Did you have all of the necessary shots to complete your film?

I did have a lot of shots but it was impossible to include it all as it would have repeating itself in the film so I was in the end a bit short for shots because some were just repeating itself only with different angles. However the quality of shots were really good as we used a lot of cine tic techniques like good camera angles to make it more interesting. However I would have liked to have more shots with more storyline involved (more dialogue) but overall I am happy with the shots we produced just the amount of them could have been improved if there was more time for filming.

• Would additional footage or reshooting some scenes have helped during the editing process?

Additional footage would have been the key to making my film longer and more interesting. As we all didn't have enough time to shoot more scenes and dialogue, we weren't able to get more, because we had to start editing and get ready to hand it in, so it was impossible to get more filming done so we had to go with what was generated in production with some other re-shooting. Therefore some additional footage would have been useful, but was impossible to create within our time limit.

• Describe whether your group worked effectively or whether most of the work was left to one or two people;

All of our group worked effectively. At the beginning it was slightly difficult for figuring out when to re-shoot because we were all busy, but we worked together to produce some good footage that we all are proud of. However back in the production stage I thought Christie could have worked harder at helping me with the shot-list because an pretty much did it myself but overall we all worked to the best of our ability.

• Explain whether you used Final Cut Pro to effectively organise your project (through the use of appropriate clip names, bins, sequences) and what you could improve for future projects;

I used Final Cut Pro very effectively. Before I imported all the footage into Final Cut Pro I organised all of my shots, even though it took a while, I got it done and ordered all my shots into what order I wanted them in, which made it so much easier when I put them in Final Cut Pro. Therefore Final Cut was used really well for me. At the start however, I did think I took a bit long to understand the program but I did eventually get it.

• Describe any problems or difficulties you encountered during post-production and editing. These may include; technical difficulties, corrupt or missing files, difficulty using the editing software, problems exporting sound or video etc;
Yes I did have a few technical difficulties. One day of re-shooting of some footage of filming, I had gathered all the footage from the re-shoot, and took it home. I had accidentally deleted it all without backing it up. (I had explained this in my blog). I also had forgot sometimes to convert all the shots which made a problem when I transfered them into Final Cut Pro.
• Clarify how you made use of storyboards, shot-lists and the rough-edit during the editing process;
I made use of storyboards, shot-lists and the rough-edit to help me through using the rough-edit especially, as a base for what I was going to do. When we gathered all the new shots during our re-shoot, I then looked at my shot-lists and storyboards for the order in which I was going to present my film. Overall they all really helped while editing. In particular, it definitely helped me order my shots when I put them all together to make the film.
• Discuss whether you made effective use of the EDL and Sound Design templates to support the editing and decision making process;
The EDL I had created had been an effective tool throughout the editing process. However a difficulty I encountered for this was the time. As I hadn't made the film yet I couldn't put the time in and out points until the end which was a bit frustrating but eventually got it done. The sound editing template was useful at some point but from a personal view, it was not the best. I was a it confused with it as well as it was difficult to write so many music segments everywhere. But overall they were both useful in different ways.
• Clarify any time-management issues you or your group encountered during the editing process and describe the steps you took to improve in this area;
There was very few time-management issues. When we re-shot our film, we used the time during class and after school very wisely and did not waste a second of filming. However it take a while to find what time to do the re-shooting as we were all busy people. But overall we were a very productive team.
• Discuss whether you undertook adequate and detailed reflection to throughout your project. Have you provided enough evidence to support your work? (Look back at your blogs/journals and think about whether it looks like a whole terms worth of work);
Overall I think I could have done a little bit better with reflections throughout the term, but I did think an did do a lot of work compared to other people in my class. But I still think I can improve to make it amzing.
