Pop Quiz

1. Setting, Style of Acting, Props, Lighting
2. A shot is any continuous piece of uninterupted filming.
3. An edit is classified as any break in the film where one shot ends and the next shot begins. The four most common types of edit are:
- Cuts
- Dissolves
- Fades
- Wipes
4. Lighting can be used to establish a mood where there would be little lighting to show a spooky dark character where a hero might need light to show he/she is the beacon of hope. Another would show an over-exposure of light where it would be a very hot and desert like place.
5. Back lighting refers to a light coming from the back of a character towards the character an then the camera also.
6. Framing is the art of deciding what images the audience will see within the frame of the cinema screen and how those images are arranged within each shot.
7. The rule of thirds is an important framing technique because studies have shown that people's eyes usually go to one of the intersection points rather than the centre of an image.
8. 2 Reasons that a cinematographer may choose to overexpose a shot might be that it is hot and a desert type of setting. Another might be that a character is dizzy and is about to pass out therefore it might go to white as the character blacks out.
9. An effect that can be achieved when underexposing a shot is by having it slow motion.
10. A low angle might suggest the character is very powerful and a strong character however a high angle shot might suggest that the character is weak and small.
11. Canted refers to a shot that moves with the character say if a character is running than the camera will be moving with the character.

Production

Today in Media Arts, the class and I were trying to come up with our own ideas for our 1 minute film. At the moment my idea is for a lone character/person trying to find a magical map that leads to a place that has another key to finding  a life times full of gold. However as this person arrives at this pace lead by the map. They find another map that leads to something else which might lead to the treasure. They are depressed but are still determined to find it therefore are on another journey.

Commercials

My Commercial:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0-9EYFJ4Clo

Why is your commercial good/bad?
This commercial is a very good commercial because it has humour and has a variation of fast and slow editing cuts at different stages in the commercial. Therefore this commercial is a very good commercial.

Editing Decision Activity

1. Scene Description:
An innocent character is stalked by a werewolf.
Editing Speed slow/fast:
Slow and Fast
Justification:
Slow editing can be used to create mystery about the stalker however fast editing can be used to create suspense and thrill.
2. Scene Description
A character confesses their horrific crime to someone.
Editing Speed slow/fast:
Slow
Justification:
Slow editing will be used to create shock but a reality of the situation.
3.  Scene Description:
Two teams compete in the finals of a street dance competition.
Editing Speed slow/fast:
Fast
Justification:
It would be fast editing because it could create a fast pasted and intense scene.
4. Scene Descripton:
A high speed car chase ends in tragedy.
Editing Speed slow/fast:
Fast and slow.
Justification:
I would use fast editing at the start of the scene where they are having a car chase to make it fast paced and an intense scene, however when there is tragedy it would be slow to create sadness and a bit of depression.

Media Arts 3

Image 1:
This image is a extreme close-up of a receipt on a clipboard from a customer specifically looking at this receipt. The camera is on a slight angle lent to the left of the receipt which make the image more visually interesting and appealing. This shot can be used at any part of a scene. This shot uses the golden triangle technique to make the image more visually appealing.

Image 2:
This image is an extreme long shot of a workplace, most likely to be in an newspaper business. The camera is on a slight angle looking to the right of a hallway, but the main viewing points are to left of the shot. They use horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines to lead the viewer to specific points of the shot.

Image 3:
This image is an medium close-up of a male character looking down to an object in his hands. This camera is on an angle making our viewing point looking up from the right but looking left to a mysterious man waiting to go in an M.Kurtzmann's office. They mainly use horizontal lines and some vertical lines.

What has happened in this scene?
In this scene a man found a debt of records receipt which is shown as a close-up of which therefore could mean the man has found something of great importance or of value. The next shot is a extreme long shot which is shown to be a hallway of people working in a cramped workspace with a man standing above them watching them and making sure they are doing their jobs. This shows that the man has great power and has authority over the workers and is probably the workers boss. The next shot is a medium shot of the pressumed boss looking down at an object in his hand. The shot is taken from a level beneath the head of the man which the camera then looks up at him to help support the idea that he is powerful and is also supported with the lighting and the black and grey colours used in the shot.

Brazil - Sam's Introduction
Q1. What does this scene tell us about the character?
This scene tells us that this character is very imaginative and has big dreams. He conveys a person that wants to be free and from his world (his apartment) which seems to be very cramped, which he wants more freedom. This is shown through his dream which shows him flying in the clouds with wing very happily. He then however finds a woman of his dreams which suggests that he wants a wife or a female figure in his life.
Q2. Is he powerful/weak?
In the real world, he seems to be a weak character, however seems to want to be a powerful character like in his dreams.

Media Arts First Lesson Back

On our first lesson for thhis year, we talked about the different topics we will be studying this year. It is film. We will learn how to analyse film and we will making a short film some time in the year. Therefore Mr Andrews started to move on and start to practive analysing film. We then watched a short clip from the film Alice in Wonderland starring Johnny Depp. He then made us chose a character from this scene and answer questions about them for homework. I chose the Chesire Cat. These were them:
